Nautical Center A Light and Flexible Structure

Introduction

The Nautical Center, situated in Nant, a quaint village in the French part of Switzerland, stands as a testament to modern architectural ingenuity. Designed by Atelier Pulver Architectes, this center comprises two distinct structures, characterized by their lightness and adaptability to evolving needs.

Architectural Concept

Autonomous Structures

The center consists of two autonomous structures, with the first one supporting an opalescent roof. This roof shelters the second structure, which comprises three self-supporting volumes housing an entertainment center for water sports activities, a lifeguard society, and public restrooms for the adjacent beach.

Flexibility and Sustainability

Atelier Pulver Architectes designed the center with a keen focus on flexibility to ensure its long-term sustainability. The structure is built to evolve and accommodate future uses, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to architectural design.

Structural Design

Large Structural Cover

The center features a large structural cover that houses each program, visually distinguished by three self-supporting volumes. Eleven arches support the roof, providing protection from weather conditions while unifying the structure.

Transitory Spaces

Two crossing arteries within the center serve as transitory spaces, facilitating movement between different areas while offering users opportunities for free appropriation. These spaces promote visual transparency with the lake and provide scenic views, enhancing the overall user experience.

Material Selection

Emphasis on Wood

Wood, particularly Swiss Label certified spruce, was chosen for its ease of implementation, environmental sustainability, durability, and visual appeal. Raw spruce, three-ply, and glued laminated timber are utilized for various structural components, ensuring harmony with the surrounding landscape.

Prefabrication and Natural Aging

To expedite construction and minimize environmental impact, all elements were prefabricated off-site and assembled on-site. The untreated wood components are left to age naturally, developing a patina that integrates seamlessly with the environment over time.

Sustainable Features

Optimized Natural Light

The opalescent roof amplifies and diffuses natural light within the premises, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting during the day. This design feature enhances energy efficiency and promotes a connection with the surrounding natural environment.

Conclusion

The Nautical Center by Atelier Pulver Architectes exemplifies a harmonious blend of architectural innovation, sustainability, and user-centric design. With its lightweight structures, flexible layout, and emphasis on natural materials, the center not only fulfills its functional requirements but also enhances the cultural and recreational experience for visitors. As a symbol of contemporary design excellence, the Nautical Center sets a new standard for architectural interventions in natural landscapes, emphasizing harmony between built and natural environments.
