Rediscovering Tradition EID Ground Reconstruction

Architectural Context

Allies and Morrison embarked on a significant project to reimagine the historic Eid ground in Doha, situated prominently across from the Al Koot Fort. Nestled south of the new National Archive building and adjacent to the Jassim Bin Mohammed heritage house, the ground holds cultural significance within its surroundings.

Site Overview

Spanning approximately 4000 square meters, the Eid ground forms a roughly rectilinear plot, intricately woven into the fabric of the Msheireb Downtown Doha Masterplan. The necessity for reconstruction arose due to the construction of a central cooling plant beneath the site, necessitating above-ground alterations to accommodate vents and escape stairs. Alongside the prayer ground and Qibla wall, the design incorporates screening walls, sun screens, and essential amenities like public conveniences and drinking fountains.

Design Philosophy

At the core of Allies and Morrison’s design approach lies the harmonization of site geometries with the sacred orientation of the Eid ground. Elevated slightly above the sloping terrain, the sacred space forms a pristine rectangle within the site’s irregular boundaries. Interspersed spaces between the site perimeter and the prayer ground accommodate infrastructure needs and amenities, ensuring a seamless blend of functionality and reverence. To shield worshippers from the elements, retractable shading devices are strategically positioned to provide protection to the northern and southern sections of the Eid ground.

Spatial Configuration

The reconstruction emphasizes the purity of geometric forms, with meticulous attention to the precise orientation of the sacred ground. Central to the design is a level platform that serves as the focal point for communal gatherings and religious ceremonies. Surrounding this sacred space, ancillary facilities and utilities are discreetly integrated, preserving the sanctity of the Eid ground while catering to practical requirements.

Conclusion

Through a delicate balance of tradition and innovation, Allies and Morrison’s design for the EID Ground reconstruction honors the rich cultural heritage of Doha while embracing contemporary spatial concepts. With meticulous attention to detail and a profound respect for sacred traditions, the project endeavors to create a welcoming and spiritually uplifting environment for worshippers and visitors alike.
