Poppy Plaza marks the inception of a larger initiative, The Memorial Drive Landscape of Memory, spanning 9.5 kilometers along Memorial Drive, dedicated to commemorating the sacrifices of Canadians in wartime. Positioned adjacent to the intersection of Memorial Drive and the 10th Street Bridge, Poppy Plaza occupies a green space nestled between the Kensington neighborhood to the North and the Bow River to the South.
Addressing Design Challenges
The development of Poppy Plaza addressed several challenges, including the need to connect disparate access points, provide river access, and resolve conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists along the river pathway. Additionally, the design aimed to create a versatile space capable of hosting large events and informal gatherings while embodying a commemorative spirit.
Innovative Design Solutions
The design of Poppy Plaza revolves around two primary surfaces: wood and weathering steel. These surfaces serve as transformative systems, offering diverse opportunities for engagement and connection. The weathering steel surface, while retaining the flood bank, establishes relationships between viewers, the river, and downtown views. Notably, two stairways connect the plaza to the river walk below, featuring narratives water-jet cut into the steel, illuminating voices of sacrifice, honor, and hope during wartime.
