In 2006, the Horticultural Show presented an opportunity to breathe new life into this forgotten corner of Wernigerode. The project aimed to reclaim the ponds and surrounding areas, transforming them into a vibrant urban space for the community to enjoy. Amidst the neglected ponds and lush forests, a wealth of biodiversity awaited rediscovery, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich ecological tapestry.
Unveiling Hidden Treasures
The Bürgerpark Wernigerode project sought to unearth the hidden potential of the site while honoring its storied past. Rather than erasing the traces of history, the design embraced the site’s unique spatial characteristics, complementing them with contemporary interventions. At the heart of the park lies the ‘Fishwalk,’ a kilometre-long pedestrian bridge that meanders through the ponds, offering visitors a scenic stroll through nature’s embrace.
Follies and Geological Wonders
Alongside the Fishwalk, whimsical structures known as follies dot the landscape, serving as emotional anchors that evoke the spirit of an English landscape park. These water stations beckon visitors to pause, reflect, and immerse themselves in the beauty of their surroundings. Meanwhile, the ‘Canyon of Minerals’ offers a geological journey through time, showcasing the region’s rich geological heritage with exemplary rock formations.
