Albert Works: A Sympathetic Integration of Heritage and Innovation

Preserving Sheffield’s Industrial Heritage

Albert Works, designed by Cartwright Pickard Architects, stands as a testament to Sheffield’s industrial past while embracing modern workspace needs. The project involved the transformation of four abandoned red-brick warehouses, along with the addition of a new central open-plan section, resulting in approximately 1,600 square meters of adaptable workspace for Jaywing, a brand and marketing agency.

Flexible Workspace Design

Jaywing’s requirements included spaces for a large design studio, as well as areas for accountants, data analysts, and management teams. Albert Works seamlessly integrates these diverse working groups within a single studio environment, offering flexibility for future expansion and adaptability.

Restoration and Integration

The original charm of the existing buildings has been meticulously restored using traditional techniques and materials. The new steel infill frame, with its exposed structure, creates three distinct bays that extend from the existing structures, forming an integrated perimeter walkway and service area. The exterior of the new sections features bronze-finished aluminum cladding, distinguishing them from the original buildings while paying homage to Sheffield’s industrial legacy.

Celebrating Heritage Through Events

Rather than erasing Sheffield’s industrial history, the vision for Albert Works was to honor and revitalize it. The building now hosts various events, injecting economic vitality into this once-neglected part of Sheffield’s City Centre. Recognized for its exceptional design, Albert Works was named Workplace of the Year at the 2018 AJ Architecture Awards and has received national recognition from RIBA and BCO.

Contribution to Cultural Regeneration

Situated in Sheffield’s regenerated Cultural Industry Quarter, Albert Works is part of a larger revitalization effort that includes other Cartwright Pickard projects such as Sellers Wheel, Alsop Fields, and Gatecrasher. These projects celebrate the area’s industrial heritage by repurposing and refurbishing existing structures, breathing new life into Sheffield’s urban landscape.
