Millac The Market, situated in Busan, South Korea, stands as a testament to innovative architectural design in the realm of retail and market spaces. Collaboratively designed by 2K1 Architecture and LJL Architects, this project reimagines traditional market concepts while embracing the surrounding urban landscape.
Urban Context
Located in a landfill area on the east side of Gwangalli Beach, the site has undergone urbanization since the 1980s. Previously an empty lot surrounded by towering buildings, the project owners envisioned a space that transcends traditional high-rise developments, prioritizing spatial values and public accessibility.
Embracing Empty Space
Unlike typical coastal commercial complexes, Millac The Market celebrates empty space and minimalist design. Low-rise structures were strategically positioned to preserve sea views from nearby residential areas, creating a visually striking contrast with the surrounding high-rises.
Incorporating Local Culture
Drawing inspiration from the area’s history of fish markets and street vendors, the market’s design incorporates elements of local culture and community life. The space is reconfigured to capture the essence of Busan’s vibrant culture, reflecting the actions and behaviors of its inhabitants.
Architectural Motifs
The circular shape of the warehouse serves as a nod to the urban context of Busan Port waterfront. Segmented roofing minimizes visual impact on pedestrians, allowing for an unobstructed view of the coastline. The southern hall acts as a transitional space, bridging the gap between the city and the sea, accommodating various cultural events and activities.
Materiality and Design
Red brick was chosen as a material to complement the warehouse’s simple form and emphasize its structural integrity. The west-facing facade features a rhythmic pattern of openings, enhancing the urban streetscape. Design motifs from Busan’s cultural heritage sites further enrich the architectural narrative, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
