Redefining Space: De La Sól Work and Exhibition Space

De La Sól, also known as Shadow, emerges as a multifaceted space in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It seamlessly blends exhibition halls, a cafe lounge, retail displays, and a client experience center for Sun Life Insurance, the primary investor. Drawing inspiration from the notion of growth, both emblematic of Sun Life’s brand promise and the thriving city of Ho Chi Minh, The Lab Saigon embarked on a design journey to craft diverse volumes within the space.

Harmonizing Old and New

The architectural narrative intertwines modernity with tradition. While preserving the historical villa facade, a new 2-story steel-and-glass structure emerges, linked by a striking loop staircase. Outdoor spaces feature bespoke rotating kinetic sculptures, serving as shading solutions and landmarks while symbolizing the concept of growth.

Unveiling History

A significant revelation during the design process was the discovery of the villa’s structural integrity. Peeling back layers of paint and plaster exposed arch gates from the past, distinct brick types from each renovation, and the century-old history embedded in every brick. This architectural narrative becomes a tribute to the city’s rich cultural heritage.

Material Symphonies

Material choices pay homage to the villa’s legacy. Original brickwork and wooden beams are retained, complemented by stainless steel for its visual allure and resilience against Vietnam’s rainy season.

An Oasis of Gathering

The outdoor deck, framed by the loop staircase, serves as a focal point for communal gatherings, offering a versatile lobby for De La Sol’s array of programs. Simultaneously, the staircase doubles as an observation deck, providing panoramic views of the activities unfolding below and around it.
