The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA) in Little Rock has embarked on a remarkable journey of revitalization, both in its physical structures and surrounding grounds. Studio Gang’s visionary design has breathed new life into the museum, seamlessly blending existing elements with innovative additions to create a cohesive 133,000-square-foot space that harmonizes with the city and park, while redefining AMFA’s architectural identity.
Revitalizing History
At the heart of the transformation lies the restoration of the Museum’s historic 1937 Art Deco façade, reinstated as the primary north entrance. This homage to the past is juxtaposed with the striking central addition featuring organic curves and a pleated roof. This modern extension not only serves as a welcoming entrance from the park side but also acts as a luminous nexus, guiding visitors through various galleries, educational facilities, and social areas within AMFA.
Seamlessly Integrated Design
Studio Gang’s design philosophy recognizes the inseparable relationship between architecture and landscape. Collaborating with SCAPE, the museum’s 11-acre landscape serves as an extension of the art experience, seamlessly merging indoor and outdoor realms. A diverse array of plantings provides shade and visual allure to outdoor spaces, while new pathways invite the public to explore nature and engage with outdoor sculptures, fostering a deeper connection between art and environment.
A Holistic Experience
The renovated Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts not only offers a vibrant cultural destination but also serves as a dynamic hub for community engagement. From immersive gallery experiences to outdoor art installations, every aspect of the museum is thoughtfully curated to enrich the lives of visitors and residents alike. With its transformative design and commitment to heritage, AMFA is poised to become a beacon of artistic excellence and civic pride in Little Rock and beyond.
