Introduction
The House of the Child, a project by Parada Cantilo Estudio, addresses the need for a multipurpose space within the “La Casa del Niño Encuentro” NGO. This NGO provides various forms of support, including education, healthcare, and meals, to children aged 3 to 12 years old.
Design Concept
Situated behind the existing building of the NGO, the new structure creates a void where outdoor activities can take place. It is strategically separated from the existing building to facilitate cross ventilation and create a generously sized patio, taking advantage of favorable orientation. This independent placement fosters a connection with the exterior on both sides, contributing to the building’s autonomy and unique morphology.
Construction Approach
In response to the need for a low-cost and minimally disruptive solution, a simple construction system was adopted. A weldable, lightweight iron structure was developed, characterized by modularity and repetition of elements to ensure rigidity. This structure forms the framework upon which the envelope, floor, and roof rest, optimizing material usage and minimizing interference with daily activities.
Architectural Features
The design incorporates transparency across the length of the terrain to maintain visual connections with the existing surroundings and open space. Inside, warmth is infused into the space through the use of eucalyptus paneling on the upper and lower surfaces. Notably, the living room features a large projecting opening towards the patio, offering versatility in its use and enhancing interaction with the outdoor environment.
Conclusion
The House of the Child exemplifies a thoughtful approach to addressing social needs through architectural design. By creating a versatile and functional space within the NGO premises, Parada Cantilo Estudio has contributed to enhancing the educational and support services provided to children in the community. The project’s emphasis on cost-effectiveness, simplicity, and integration with the existing environment reflects a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
