The Western Michigan University (WMU) Student Center stands as a symbol of inclusivity and belonging, rooted in the heritage of the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Bodewadmi nations. Designed to be a student-centric space, it replaces the Bernhard Center, serving as a vibrant hub for connection, community, and collaboration among all students.
Design Philosophy
Fueled by WMU’s dedication to inclusive design, the new Student Center underwent an extensive stakeholder engagement process, guided by principles of Institutional Diversity and Multiculturalism (IDM). Drawing inspiration from the school’s natural surroundings and Native American culture, the building incorporates elements such as circular rooms and curved walls, reminiscent of the traditional sitting circle.
The “Heart” of the Building
At the core of the Student Center lies the iconic central atrium, aptly named the “Heart.” Lined with cedarwood and bathed in natural light from skylights above, this space reflects the lush forests of Michigan. Serving as a meeting point for affinity groups, it embodies the spirit of community and connection.
Exterior Design
The exterior of the building is envisioned as a forest standing on bedrock, with gold fins providing sun protection and casting shadows mimicking a tree canopy. The lower level resembles the region’s Kalamazoo bedrock, creating a visually striking effect of geometric terraces when illuminated by sunlight.
Student-Centered Environment
Designed to help all students feel recognized and connected, the Student Center offers gathering spaces, dining facilities, retail locations, and more. Its inclusive design fosters a sense of belonging, going beyond mere aesthetics to embody WMU’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
