Transforming Spaces The Nest Nursery in East London

Introduction

The Nest Nursery, situated in Royal Wharf, East London, represents a vibrant transformation of a vacant commercial unit into a nurturing environment for young learners. Designed by Delve Architects, this innovative project emphasizes durable design and natural materials to foster explorative play and education.

Context and Location

Located at the base of a 19-story residential building along the riverfront near the Thames Barrier, The Nest is an integral part of Phase 4 of the Ballymore/Oxley masterplan. Positioned in an area experiencing an influx of young families, the nursery caters to the evolving needs of the community.

Expanding Space and Enhancing Design

To maximize internal floor space and facilitate indoor play, Delve Architects introduced a new mezzanine level, expanding the area from under 200 sqm to approximately 270 sqm. The addition of two staircases, including a bespoke powder-coated metal stair, complements the double-height space adorned with arched timber fins. These fins, reaching a height of 4.5m, symbolize the nurturing ethos of ‘the Nest’ concept, promoting homely environments and holistic learning experiences.

Embracing Natural and Sustainable Materials

In line with its commitment to sustainability, Delve Architects selected natural and tactile materials for The Nest Nursery. Maple veneered joinery, recycled linoleum flooring, and low VOC paints contribute to a fresh and colorful interior palette. HVAC services are intentionally exposed, sprayed in a deep matte pink to engage young minds and demystify the nursery’s operational elements.

Integration with Outdoor Spaces

The nursery boasts a 145 sqm garden overlooking the riverfront, seamlessly connected to the indoor environment through bi-folding doors. Designed as an extension of the learning environment, the garden features natural bark, sand, and a fallen tree serving as both play equipment and a space for den building. External fencing, meticulously crafted to harmonize with the existing tower’s balconies, adds to the aesthetic coherence of the space.

Conclusion

The Nest Nursery exemplifies a holistic approach to early childhood education, blending innovative design with a deep respect for nature and sustainability. By creating nurturing spaces that inspire curiosity and exploration, Delve Architects has not only transformed a commercial unit but also enriched the lives of young learners in East London’s Royal Wharf community.
