Located in the picturesque surroundings of the north of Sichuan, at the base of the Luo Fu Shan mountain range, lies the enchanting Fushengyu Hotspring Resort. Surrounded by tree-capped mountains adorned with temples, this resort stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature and architecture.
Design Concept Inspired by Nature
From its inception, the captivating scenery surrounding Fushengyu Hotspring Resort has profoundly influenced its design concept. This project presented a unique opportunity for AIM Architecture to integrate planning, architecture, landscape, and interiors, creating a holistic concept inspired by the natural elements of the land, particularly water.
A Sanctuary of Water Experiences
Central to the resort’s allure is its expansive spa, offering a diverse range of water experiences. Nestled around a hill at the heart of the site, the spa building offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley. The design of the building and the spa experiences it offers are intricately linked to the natural contours of the hill, providing guests with varying vistas as they progress through the bathing stages.
Expressing the Essence of Water
The outdoor pools at Fushengyu Hotspring Resort embody the theme of water in its myriad forms. From still pools to bubbling whirlpools, each experience is crafted to evoke the essence of water—be it in the form of steam, ice, or infused with herbs and minerals. These pools are seamlessly integrated into the landscape, offering guests a truly immersive escape.
Materials Rooted in Nature
In keeping with the resort’s commitment to nature, the choice of materials reflects a deep reverence for the environment. Clay mixed with pebbles and stained timber form the basis of many walls, while locally sourced River Stone—a conglomerate shaped by water over time—features prominently across the resort. From floors to poolside seats, this natural stone infuses every aspect of the architecture with an authentic connection to the land.
Architectural Ensemble and Guest Accommodations
Beyond the spa, Fushengyu Hotspring Resort comprises an architectural ensemble, including the MuWeCo building—a multifunctional space housing a museum, wedding hall, and conference area. Characterized by its distinctive vaulted roof, the MuWeCo building offers a dramatic entrance lobby and expansive deck overlooking the valley. Guest accommodations consist of various villas, each a sculptural timber-clad structure designed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings.
Contemporary Interiors Rooted in Warmth
The interiors of Fushengyu Hotspring Resort exude a contemporary yet warm ambiance, achieved through the use of natural materials such as wood, cork, and rugs. Custom-designed furniture adds to the sense of comfort and intimacy, creating spaces that invite relaxation and rejuvenation.
Cultivating Unique Relationships
Building Fushengyu Hotspring Resort in a remote location necessitated a close relationship between the architects and local builders. This collaboration not only facilitated the realization of innovative designs but also fostered mutual learning, as traditional building methods met modern architectural concepts.
A Sanctuary of Wellness and Architectural Marvel
In the tranquil embrace of the Chinese countryside, Fushengyu Hotspring Resort stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of wellness and architecture. As a personal, sustainable, and enchanting retreat, it embodies the timeless allure of nature’s embrace.
