By A Fusion of Finnish Design and Artistry
Perched atop the Queen Elizabeth Hall roof terrace in Southbank, London, the sauna stands as a testament to Finnish design prowess, seamlessly blending architecture and art. Born out of a collaboration between Aalto University and Southbank Centre, the Finnish Rooftop Sauna is the brainchild of Aalto University MA students Pedro Pablo Garcia Alcazar, Markus Holste, Monica Romagnoli, and Miki Sordi, alongside Finnish sculptor Jaakko Pernu. This unique sauna, a striking manifestation of Finnish culture, is open to visitors until December 30th.
Architectural Vision and Symbolism
Professor Pentti Kareoja of Aalto University reflects on the significance of the project, acknowledging the honor and challenge of creating a sauna—an emblem of Finnish identity—in the heart of London. Embracing the symbolism and expectations associated with saunas, the students approached the design with empathy and innovation. The sauna’s architecture revolves around a wooden frame structure, repeated longitudinally to suit its urban setting. Adorned with translucent polycarbonate plates, illuminated to create a luminous beacon amidst London’s winter nights, the sauna stands as a symbol of warmth and community.
Ritualistic Interior Design
Inside, the sauna’s layout reflects the traditional sauna rituals, with users progressing from separate functions at each end to a central communal sauna area. Here, bathers can engage in conversation, admire sculptor Jaakko Pernu’s artwork, and savor panoramic views of the River Thames. The Finnish Rooftop Sauna is not merely a recreational facility but a cultural landmark, offering visitors a glimpse into Nordic traditions and values.
