Conceptual Inspiration
The transformation of Keki Shop by Kilogram Studio was born out of a client’s vision to create a space for the renowned Japanese brand LeTAO that seamlessly integrates with the local neighborhood while upholding the brand’s commitment to excellence. Drawing inspiration from LeTAO’s signature cheesecakes and cookies, which are baked in moulds with paper lining, the design process was informed by explorations of the manufacturing process and the rich textures associated with baked goods.
Texture and Materiality
Central to the design concept was the exploration of textures and materials that evoke the essence of LeTAO’s artisanal treats. Poured concrete sidewalks and trowelled roadways found in the surrounding neighborhood served as a source of inspiration, mirroring the wrinkled texture of paper lining used in the baking process. The interior space features a richly colored and patterned terrazzo floor, reminiscent of its former tenants, which complements the blue-stained wood accents that offset the cream-colored cheesecakes on display.
Functional Elegance
Treats are prominently displayed on a central plinth, drawing the eye of customers towards the delectable offerings. Suspended above the plinth is an illuminated fabric structure that not only serves as a focal point but also enhances the visual appeal of the display. Steel frame display shelving lines the surrounding walls, providing ample space for showcasing LeTAO’s products while creating a visually dynamic environment. Service counters clad with fabric-textured concrete further contribute to the tactile and sensory experience of the space.
Urban Integration
In an effort to seamlessly integrate with the urban fabric of the neighborhood, the design extends beyond the confines of the shop’s interior. Display shelves and fixtures are conceived as an extension of street furniture, incorporating concrete elements and A-frame signs reminiscent of Toronto sidewalks. Linear shelf frames along the exterior wall offer glimpses of the street while maintaining a sense of intimacy within the space. This harmonious blend of interior design and urban elements creates an immersive experience that extends from the shop floor to the bustling street outside.
Conclusion
In essence, the redesign of Keki Shop by Kilogram Studio is a testament to the power of thoughtful design in creating immersive and memorable experiences. By drawing inspiration from LeTAO’s artisanal process and integrating elements of the local neighborhood, the design team has crafted a space that not only showcases the brand’s products but also invites customers on a sensory journey of texture, color, and aroma. With its harmonious blend of functionality, elegance, and urban integration, Keki Shop sets a new standard for retail design that celebrates both craftsmanship and community.
