Redefining Hospitality: Hotel MINHO Renewal and Expansion by i

Embracing Architectural Continuity

The project for the renewal and expansion of Hotel MINHO commenced with the vision to rejuvenate a structure erected in 2006, which underwent renovations in 2014 to enhance its public spaces and spa facilities. To uphold the existing architectural ethos while infusing a renewed vitality, the expansion sought to harmonize with the original building’s aesthetic, albeit mundane, and present a more compelling image.

Seamlessly Integrated Design Solutions

The architectural intervention embraced simplicity, with select areas designed to foster introspection, all while preserving the existing framework and integrating new spaces beneath the primary entrance. Emphasizing visual harmony, the incorporation of a green roof and the continuation of the exterior white walls aimed to minimize the visual impact of the expansions, ensuring a seamless blend with the surroundings.

Celebrating Local Craftsmanship

In a bid to forge stronger ties with the locale, the extension drew inspiration from indigenous materials, construction traditions, and regional architectural motifs. Chestnut wood, abundant in the vicinity, emerged as a predominant feature, delineating new spaces and embodying the essence of the hotel’s surroundings. These wooden volumes, serving as organizers of the hotel’s layout, imbued the interiors with warmth and character, forging a cohesive link between indoor and outdoor realms.

Crafting Bespoke Interiors

The interior design of Hotel MINHO was conceived as an integral component of the overarching architectural narrative. While maintaining the integrity of the existing exterior, the project afforded greater creative freedom within the interior spaces. Wood volumes traversing the hotel’s floors seamlessly bridged the indoor-outdoor divide, offering guests a harmonious sanctuary amidst the region’s verdant landscapes.

A Tribute to Architectural Heritage

Drawing inspiration from Portuguese modern architecture and mid-century design, the interiors exuded a timeless elegance rooted in local vernacular aesthetics. Materials such as Iberian chestnut wood and Carrara marble were meticulously curated to strike a balance between tradition and modernity, with a neutral palette accentuated by elements of warmth and sophistication.

Crafting a Timeless Legacy

The meticulous selection of furnishings, including vintage pieces and contemporary designs, reflected the project’s commitment to timeless elegance and functional efficiency. Furthermore, the integration of locally sourced and bespoke furniture items underscored the project’s ethos of celebrating artisanal craftsmanship and preserving cultural heritage.

A Fusion of Past and Present

Hotel MINHO stands as a testament to the seamless integration of architectural innovation and timeless design principles. By honoring local traditions, embracing contemporary aesthetics, and championing sustainable practices, the project epitomizes a holistic approach to hospitality design, inviting guests to embark on a journey of unparalleled comfort and sophistication.
