Rediscovering History: Restaurant Felix by i29 interior architects

A Journey Through Time

On January 30th, 2020, Restaurant Felix welcomed its first patrons within the illustrious confines of the Historical Felix Meritis building in Amsterdam. Originally constructed in 1788, Felix Meritis served as the nucleus for cultural enlightenment, fostering disciplines ranging from music and drawing to physics and literature. Rooted in Enlightenment ideals, the building stands as a testament to intellectual curiosity and artistic expression.

Resurrecting Elegance

i29 interior architects spearheaded the comprehensive redesign of Felix Meritis in 2020, infusing each space with a distinct narrative that pays homage to its storied past. Embracing a bold design ethos, the interiors serve as a visual chronicle, evoking the spirit of different historical epochs while embracing contemporary sensibilities. The restaurant, in particular, draws inspiration from Dutch period rooms of the 18th century, reimagining historical hues and textile motifs through a modern lens.

Collaborative Innovation

Tasked with revitalizing the venue, i29 collaborated with a team of advisors and artisans to bring their vision to life. Teaming up with textile designers Buro Belén, bespoke wall coverings were crafted to echo the texture and hues of the Dutch sky, enhancing both aesthetics and acoustics. Modern light installations, reminiscent of grand chandeliers, illuminate the space, seamlessly connecting the restaurant with the reception area to create a captivating entry point.

Culinary Excellence

Underpinning the gastronomic experience at Restaurant Felix is a commitment to culinary excellence. Breaking from tradition, the restaurant boasts a permanent chef, ensuring a consistent and elevated dining experience. With a mantra of “think globally but trade locally,” the culinary team promises a menu that celebrates both international flavors and local produce, embodying the spirit of modern gastronomy.

As Felix Meritis unveils its transformed identity on March 20th, 2020, Restaurant Felix stands as a testament to the enduring allure of history and the transformative power of design.
