Preserving Heritage ARC Painswick Revitalization

Revitalizing Historic Properties

Parti has undertaken the transformation of several Grade II Listed medieval gabled houses in Gloucestershire, culminating in the creation of ARC Painswick. This project marks the latest endeavor in Parti’s collaboration with ARC, a hospitality business dedicated to the restoration and adaptation of historic properties for modern-day use.

Redefining Hospitality

Launched in 2021, ARC introduces a novel tourism concept, refurbishing historic properties to accommodate large groups seeking affordable yet luxurious escapes in the UK. Embracing the ethos of accessible luxury and low-carbon holidaying, ARC reimagines traditional English country houses for contemporary travelers. Under the stewardship of Parti, previous projects include the renovation of an 18th-century manor house in Cornwall (ARC Padstow) and a rural Victorian former mill building in the Peak District National Park.

A Collaborative Partnership

Parti and ARC operate as co-founders, with Parti assuming the roles of entrepreneur, designer, and architect. This unique collaboration ensures a holistic approach to project management, where architectural design, budgeting, and delivery are of equal importance.

Reimagining Space

The core design strategy for ARC Painswick involved reconfiguring the building layout to create expansive communal areas and reinstating two courtyards to maximize natural light. The transformation turned a previously fragmented B&B layout into a flexible, open space that celebrates the building’s medieval heritage.

Sustainable Restoration

A commitment to sustainability guided the restoration process, with a focus on minimizing waste and preserving existing materials. Patch repairs were favored over wholesale replacements, while existing furniture was refurbished or sourced second-hand to reduce environmental impact. Carbon-conscious design choices, such as the use of reclaimed wood for furniture and avoidance of steel, further underscored the project’s eco-friendly approach.

Energy Efficiency

To transition away from fossil fuels, ARC Painswick incorporates modern heating systems, including an electric stove and air-source heat pump, to reduce energy consumption. Zoned heating control optimizes energy usage within the building, ensuring comfort while minimizing environmental impact.

Seamless Integration

A new kitchen extension seamlessly integrates with the historic fabric, providing both indoor and outdoor gathering spaces. The extension serves as a conduit for multidirectional circulation, enhancing accessibility while preserving the building’s architectural integrity.

Preserving Character

The restoration highlights the building’s five centuries of history, celebrating its imperfections and irregularities as integral features. Soft limestone walls and original ceiling beams contrast with contemporary elements, creating a cohesive blend of old and new.

Community Engagement

ARC Painswick aims to engage the local community through curated events and exhibitions, fostering a sense of inclusivity and shared heritage. Bay windows showcase rotating art displays, while collaborative initiatives like the ARC Lobby platform provide opportunities for local businesses to thrive.

A New Hospitality Paradigm

The transformation of ARC Painswick signifies a shift in hospitality paradigms, offering a sustainable, community-oriented alternative to traditional accommodation. By reimagining historic properties for contemporary use, ARC and Parti ensure the preservation of heritage while providing memorable experiences for modern travelers.
