By Nestled in the quaint Longjing Village, Baofeng Town, Zhushan County, Hubei Province, China, the Wufu Shanshui Dragon Family Banquet Restaurant stands as a beacon of culinary excellence and architectural innovation. Crafted by Describing Architecture Studio, this restaurant serves as the focal point of the Wufu Longjing Smart Agricultural Innovation Park, offering a distinctive dining experience amidst the picturesque surroundings. With its close proximity to the revered ancient tree Longjing Square, the restaurant seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, creating a harmonious space for gastronomic delights and community gatherings.
Designing for Community and Culture
Longjing Village, renowned for its ancient trees and rich tea culture, provided the perfect backdrop for the restaurant’s design. Tasked with accommodating up to 24 tables of varying sizes, the architects envisioned a space that would evoke a sense of unity with the village while offering flexibility for different dining experiences. The narrow and elongated site, adjacent to Longjing Square, posed a unique challenge, but also served as inspiration for the design. Drawing cues from the ancient Longjing trees, the architects created a series of “Scattered Boxes,” each housing different dining and reception spaces, arranged in a linear fashion to form a dynamic laneway that integrates seamlessly with the rural landscape.
Harmony in Form and Function
The architectural composition is characterized by a unified roof that gracefully envelops the individual boxes, providing shelter and continuity while accentuating the natural contours of the terrain. Open spaces between the boxes offer inviting areas for relaxation and social interaction, enhancing the overall dining experience. The use of linoleum tile roofing material not only ensures structural integrity but also reflects the region’s vernacular architecture, creating a visual dialogue between tradition and modernity.
Innovative Construction Techniques
Employing a combination of framed and steel structures, the architects implemented a low-tech approach to construction, inspired by the self-built houses prevalent in rural areas. By utilizing relatively small steel columns and semi-rigid connections, they achieved a balance between structural stability and aesthetic expression, seamlessly blending the industrial with the organic. This innovative construction method not only enhances the building’s visual appeal but also aligns with the project’s budgetary constraints, demonstrating a pragmatic yet creative approach to design.
