Context and Vision
Nestled within the serene landscapes of rural France, the Maroquinerie de la Sormonne project by Coldefy Architects stands as a testament to innovative industrial architecture, blending functionality with sustainability. Envisioned in collaboration with Hermès, this project reimagines the traditional workshop, integrating modern design principles with environmental stewardship.
Architectural Innovation
The Maroquinerie de la Sormonne is more than just a leather goods factory; it’s a fusion of artistry and functionality. Designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings, the factory’s folded roof and timber framework pay homage to traditional craftsmanship while embracing modernity. This architectural approach creates a workspace that inspires creativity and collaboration among artisans.
Resilient Structure
Spanning 5,700 square meters, the factory boasts a resilient structure clad in burnt wood and large glass facades. The workshop space is meticulously organized to optimize functionality, with adaptable cutting workshops at its core. Cantilevers along the building’s length provide outdoor porches and terraces, enhancing the workspace’s flexibility and connectivity with nature.
Sustainable Materials and Design
At the heart of the Maroquinerie de la Sormonne is a commitment to sustainability. Locally sourced Douglas fir forms the primary structure, complemented by dark-tinted aluminum joinery and burnt-wood cladding. This thoughtful selection of materials not only reduces the building’s carbon footprint but also ensures longevity and aesthetic appeal.
Environmental Integration
Situated within an 8-hectare park, the factory seamlessly integrates with its natural environment. Preservation of existing flora and fauna, coupled with the creation of plant corridors and orchards, promotes biodiversity and ecological balance. Moreover, the factory’s bioclimatic design, featuring solar panels, geothermal heating, and high-performance insulation, minimizes its environmental impact while maximizing energy efficiency.
Certification and Recognition
The Maroquinerie de la Sormonne has achieved E4C2 certification, signifying its status as a positive energy building with minimal carbon footprint. This accolade reflects Coldefy and Hermès’ shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and sustainability. Through its timeless architecture and bioclimatic design, the factory embodies a harmonious balance between tradition and progress, setting a new standard for industrial architecture in the 21st century.
