Introduction
In 2023, CASE-REAL embarked on a project to transform an 80-year-old traditional Japanese house into a craft beer brewery named “Whale Brewing” in Saga, Japan. Situated in Yobuko, once a thriving whaling base during the Edo period and now renowned for its squid fishing industry, the town faces challenges such as population decline and vacant houses. The project aimed to breathe new life into the town amid these conditions.
Renovation Process
Located along “Yobuko Asaichi-dori,” where local seafood and goods stalls line the streets every morning, the chosen site was a vacant traditional house. Years of neglect had left the building in disrepair, requiring structural reinforcement, roof repairs, and facade restoration. Despite its dilapidated state, the interior revealed a robust structure with a height of approximately 9 meters after dismantling.
Architectural Vision
Through collaborative discussions with the client, CASE-REAL sought to preserve the building’s inherent charm while integrating modern brewery elements. The design features a storefront with a raised ceiling toward the facade, while an atrium creates a dramatic void within the brewing area. The glass facade allows natural light to illuminate the wooden framework, evoking a brewery ambiance.
Integration of Tradition and Innovation
Stainless steel accents, such as counters and handles, maintain material continuity with brewing equipment, while solid Japanese cypress pillars add structural support and visual appeal. Rounded shapes soften the architectural lines, harmonizing structure and aesthetics. The incorporation of traditional elements with modern functions aims to establish Whale Brewing as a cultural landmark rooted in the local community.
Conclusion
Whale Brewing represents a fusion of tradition and innovation, breathing new life into a historic Japanese town. By repurposing an old house into a vibrant brewery, CASE-REAL honors the town’s heritage while addressing contemporary challenges. As a symbol of resilience and community spirit, Whale Brewing stands as a testament to the power of architectural transformation in revitalizing local economies and preserving cultural identity.
