Transforming Transit Riverstone Transit Center

The Riverstone Transit Center, designed by ALSC Architects, marks a significant milestone in providing a central hub for administrative staff and bus services catering to City Link and Paratransit riders. Focused on enhancing the rider experience, the project aims to deliver safety, cleanliness, and convenience through its strategic design elements.

Contextual Heritage: A Journey Through Time

Situated on land with historical significance, the Transit Center pays homage to its past as a hub for regional trading and traveling Tribal factions of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. Evolving from its centuries-old roots, the center now serves as a modern-day multi-modal transportation hub, seamlessly connecting various modes of transit.

Rider Equity and Accessibility

Central to the project’s mission is the promotion of rider equity, particularly for individuals with disabilities. The transformation of a previously gravel lot into a fully accessible space reflects a commitment to removing barriers. From accessible parking to pathways and Paratransit support services, every aspect is designed to ensure inclusivity.

Innovative Design Solutions

The design of the Transit Center integrates three essential components – Administrative Building, outdoor public restrooms, and a covered waiting shelter – under one cohesive roof. Balancing the need for separation and connectivity, the passenger shelter provides respite from the elements while encouraging efficient rider turnover.

Functional Integration

The Administrative Building serves as the nerve center, overseeing transit operations while maintaining a visual connection with daily ridership activities. Solar shading provided by Corten steel fins ensures comfort while enhancing the architectural appeal. The thoughtful combination of materials, spatial layout, and landscaping fosters a sense of community ownership and encourages transit system utilization among residents and visitors alike.

Through its thoughtful design and commitment to accessibility, the Riverstone Transit Center stands as a testament to the evolution of transportation infrastructure, seamlessly blending heritage with modern functionality.
