Introduction

In 2021, INI Design Studio unveiled the Waste-To-Energy (WTE) Campus in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India, revolutionizing waste management and energy production. Aligned with global environmental goals and India’s Swachh Bharat Mission, the campus utilizes cutting-edge technology to convert municipal solid waste (MSW) into clean energy while addressing pressing waste management challenges.

Innovative Waste Management

India generates 62 million tonnes of MSW annually, posing significant environmental and health risks. The WTE Campus processes 2,20,000 tons of MSW yearly, producing 7.5 MW of clean energy, sufficient to power 15,000 homes. The project not only tackles waste but also transforms a barren 17-acre land into a vibrant greenbelt, featuring recreational and community spaces.

Sustainable Design Approach

Following the principle of “form follows function,” the campus features a simple, open-span, lightweight prefab recycled steel structure. A translucent, multilayered polycarbonate facade system enhances thermal performance while reducing operational costs and energy consumption. Water conservation and landscaping efforts create a green social landscape, improving air quality and microclimate.

Value Chains and Circular Economy

Beyond energy production, the campus integrates additional value chains in waste management. Processes include producing BioCNG from organic MSW, recovering recyclable plastic, green chemical production, and converting fly ash into construction materials, fostering a circular economy. Educational and research opportunities contribute to social upliftment.

The WTE Campus has earned prestigious accolades, including being recognized as “India’s first platinum-rated net-zero Green Waste-to-Energy Campus” by the Indian Green Building Council and receiving the 2023 Green Good Design Award.
