Exploring Nature’s Symphony: Elsa Eschelsson’s Park

An Ode to Rain: Design Philosophy

Elsa Eschelsson’s Park, crafted by Karavan landskapsarkitekter, is a testament to the beauty of rain, inviting visitors to observe and experience its rhythm. This multifunctional park is ingeniously designed to accommodate heavy rains, with flooded activity spaces serving as a unique feature during downpours.

Harnessing Stormwater: Functional Design

Throughout the park, stormwater takes center stage, manifesting in various forms to create an immersive experience. A central stormwater pond, flanked by adjacent decking, serves as a focal point, showcasing the ebb and flow of rainwater. Hard surfaces within the park visualize stormwater levels, raising awareness about its path in urban landscapes. Divided into three parts—the activity area, stormwater pond, and green park area—the park seamlessly integrates functionality with aesthetics.

Dynamic Activity Area

The activity area features a lowered concrete surface with smooth sloping edges, ideal for biking, skateboarding, basketball, and more. Crafted from cast concrete, this surface is engineered to withstand heavy rains, ensuring durability and safety. Illuminated by light poles with gobo filters, the projected light mimics the rippled surface of water, adding a touch of magic to the space.

Central Stormwater Pond

At the heart of the park lies the stormwater pond, designed to maximize volume and functionality. With vertical edges and a built deck, the pond offers both practicality and visual appeal. The north side boasts a sunny footpath and generous seating, while the south side features lush greenery, creating a haven for water-dwelling plants and wildlife. Tall perennial ornamental grasses sway gracefully in the wind, adding movement and texture to the landscape. During heavy rains, the pond overflows onto the activity area, creating a dynamic interplay between water and recreation.

Green Park Oasis

Beyond the stormwater pond, the green park area welcomes visitors with smooth concave surfaces and lush lawns. Designed to absorb excess rainwater, the surface contributes to groundwater balance while providing a tranquil setting for picnics, sports, and social gatherings. Domestic trees and shrubs further enhance the park’s connection to the surrounding forest, blurring the boundaries between nature and urbanity.

Artistic Flourish

A whimsical sculpture, crafted in the shape of a seashell by artist Åsa Maria Bengtsson, adds a playful touch to the park. Nestled on a bench, this sculpture features a sound installation that surprises visitors with the soothing sounds of water and the roaring sea, further enriching the sensory experience of Elsa Eschelsson’s Park.

Elsa Eschelsson’s Park stands as a testament to innovative design, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetics to create a dynamic urban oasis where nature takes center stage.
