Nurturing Nature: Campus Albano’s Landscape Design

Transforming Industrial Heritage into Educational Excellence

Campus Albano, situated in the former industrial area of Albano in northern Stockholm, represents a remarkable transformation into a vibrant university district. Strategically positioned between Stockholm University’s Frescati Campus, the Royal Institute of Technology, and the Karolinska Institute, Campus Albano serves as the linchpin uniting these prestigious institutions. Positioned at the heart of the Stockholm Science City cluster, the campus emerges as a pivotal hub for academic collaboration and innovation.

Harnessing the Natural Surroundings

The landscape design of Campus Albano draws inspiration from its unique setting within the Royal National City Park and the cultural heritage landscape surrounding Lake Brunnsviken. Embracing the natural environment, the landscape serves as a foundational element in shaping the campus identity, fostering spatial, social, and ecological connectivity. With a focus on panoramic views and integration with the surrounding landscape, the master plan aims to cultivate an inviting and immersive public space conducive to vibrant campus life.

Ecological Sustainability at its Core

Innovative approaches to water management and biodiversity define Campus Albano’s landscape design. Dynamic water streams and adaptable plantings accommodate fluctuating water levels, promoting resilience and ecological diversity over time. Native plant species are strategically incorporated to establish green corridors and enhance ecosystem resilience. Embracing ecological principles, forested areas undergo controlled thinning to mimic natural processes and optimize habitat quality. Additionally, the campus features a comprehensive stormwater management system, including a central watercourse that filters and delays stormwater runoff before it reaches Lake Brunnsviken.

Artistic Expression and Climate Awareness

At the heart of Campus Albano lies a captivating artistic installation: Future Island by Ooze. This innovative artwork symbolizes the intersection of art, science, and environmental awareness. Comprising an island divided into two climate zones, Future Island dynamically reflects the impact of climate change over time. As visitors traverse the island, they witness firsthand the evolving landscapes shaped by shifting climate patterns, fostering dialogue and reflection on pressing environmental issues.

A Harmonious Fusion of Education and Environment

Campus Albano stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of education, innovation, and environmental stewardship. By seamlessly blending academic excellence with ecological sustainability, the campus exemplifies a holistic approach to urban development. As students, faculty, and researchers converge within its green corridors and open spaces, Campus Albano emerges as a beacon of learning, discovery, and environmental consciousness in the heart of Stockholm.
