Collaboration with Specialfastigheter
FOJAB arkitekter embarked on a project to design a new court building in Lund, Sweden, with Specialfastigheter as the client. The objective was clear: to create the most contemporary court facility in the country.
Integration into the Urban Fabric
Situated west of the railway line in central Lund, adjacent to Bjeredsparken park, the new district court seamlessly blends into the city’s growth. It complements the existing building blocks, bridging the gap between urban development and green spaces while establishing a distinct boundary between the park and the railway.
Architectural Features
The design concept aligns with Kristallen, the municipal office building, ensuring architectural harmony. The building’s southern façade facing Tingsrättsplatsen square features a two-story drop, welcoming visitors into the court. Clad in copper and glass with vertical elements for sun screening and horizontal bands for scale, the structure rests on a limestone plinth, integrating with surrounding public spaces.
Interior Aesthetics and Functionality
Internally, the building showcases a harmonious blend of materials, including copper sheets, glass, limestone, and oiled ash panels. Public areas span two floors, offering expansive views of the park through large glass windows. Careful consideration of transparency balances views, daylight, and privacy. The design incorporates two roof terraces adjacent to staff canteens, enhancing employee amenities.
Addressing Security and Flow
The logistical challenges of managing different user flows within the court were met by strategically locating entrances around the building perimeter. This approach not only optimizes security but also activates the urban space. Internally, the facility is organized into four security zones catering to the general public, prosecutors, personnel, and detainees, ensuring efficient and secure operations.
Conclusion
The Lund District Court by FOJAB arkitekter stands as a testament to modern architectural and functional design principles. By seamlessly integrating into Lund’s urban landscape while prioritizing security, functionality, and aesthetics, the court building sets a new standard for legal infrastructure in Sweden.
