Revamping Zhelin Administration and Community Service Center

Introduction

The Zhelin Administration and Community Service Center, situated in Zhelin New Town of Fengxian District, Shanghai, underwent a significant redesign process led by One Design. Originally conceived as a retail venue with ambiguous program configuration, the building possessed a deep structure and decorative facade elements that aligned with the neighboring residential quarter.

Retrofitting Initiative

Upon One Design’s invitation to repurpose the building for administration and community service functions, the retrofitting process commenced. While the underground structure was already in place as per the original design, the focus shifted towards optimizing natural ventilation and lighting within the space.

Maximizing Natural Elements

A central volume was removed and relocated to the southeast corner to create a central void, facilitating improved ventilation and lighting. This void not only serves as a technical interface between the interior and nature but also functions as an active vertical garden, fostering a connection with the surrounding environment. Landscaped terraces within the void provide scenic views and enhance the overall experience.

Symmetrical Design Enhancements

Curved outdoor stairs were introduced to connect the terraces, offering tangible experiences beyond visual aesthetics. With the addition of volume in the southeast corner, the south facade gains symmetry, marking a definitive end point to the axis from an artificial lake to the south, accentuating the building’s civic presence.

Harmonious Composition

The irregular building form on the north and west sides adhered to sun shadow setback requirements. Utilizing glass-fiber reinforced concrete panel and composite wood panel, the design achieved a coherent composition with varying degrees of transparency and solidity. Balconies and connecting corridors further enriched the facade language, transforming the structure into a cohesive ensemble of diverse elements.

Conclusion

Through thoughtful retrofitting and strategic design interventions, the Zhelin Administration and Community Service Center has been revitalized into a dynamic and permeable space. The integration of natural elements, harmonious composition, and enhanced connectivity with the surrounding environment reflect a commitment to creating a vibrant civic hub that serves the needs of the community while contributing to the urban fabric of Zhelin New Town.
