The Xiafu Farmers’ Market project, situated in Xiafu Village, Diankou, represents a significant endeavor to rejuvenate a vital community space. Originally constructed in 2003 by the local government, the market served as a hub for trade and social interaction among villagers. However, over time, changes in economic dynamics and lifestyle preferences led to a decline in its utilization. Recognizing the need for renewal, the Diankou Village Architect Project was initiated, with the Xiafu Village Farmers’ Market chosen as a pilot project.
Village Architect Project
Led by Mr. Qiu Zhefeng, the Village Architect Project aimed to revitalize public spaces through thoughtful design interventions. Architects immersed themselves in village life, conducting interviews and surveys to understand the community’s needs. The goal was to reimagine the market as a vibrant and functional space that resonated with villagers’ lifestyles.
Design Strategy
Two key design modifications were implemented to transform the market. Firstly, the original linear layout of the sloping roof was replaced with a continuous, folded roof structure. This innovative design created a welcoming ambiance, inviting villagers to enter from any direction while enhancing natural lighting within the market. Secondly, the stall layout was reconfigured into a square enclosed form resembling the Chinese character “回” (meaning “return” or “loop”). This reorganization delineated clear zones for sellers and buyers, fostering a sense of ownership among sellers and promoting orderliness within the market.
The Result
Following the completion of the revitalized market, villagers embraced the redesigned space, abandoning their makeshift stalls outside in favor of the newly organized interior. The market has experienced a resurgence in activity, with vendors and patrons alike benefiting from the improved layout and functionality. Despite being housed in the same building, the market has undergone a remarkable transformation, reestablishing itself as a thriving hub of community commerce and interaction.
