Situated in the heart of Lisbon, the Chagas Apartment is housed within a historic building dating back to the late 19th century. Originally a grand residence, the apartment underwent a transformative renovation led by João Tiago Aguiar Arquitectos, aimed at optimizing space and restoring its former glory.
Honoring Heritage
Despite a previous rehabilitation about 15 years ago, the apartment had lost some of its original charm over time. However, this presented a compelling challenge and opportunity for the architects—to preserve and accentuate the apartment’s architectural heritage while meeting the needs of its new occupants.
Preserving Essence
The focal point of the renovation was to reclaim the apartment’s old-world charm, which involved uncovering and restoring hidden treasures such as the scullery and magnificent stained glass windows overlooking a central interior patio. These elements not only brought natural light into the space but also elevated its magnificence, serving as reminders of its storied past.
Reviving Elegance
Central to the restoration was the rehabilitation of the ornate ceilings from the late 19th century, accentuated with concealed lighting to highlight their intricate details. The interior décor was meticulously curated, featuring lightweight furnishings carefully selected to complement the apartment’s noble ambiance without overshadowing its architectural splendor.
Custom Craftsmanship
Every aspect of the apartment was tailored to perfection, with custom-designed furniture including living room bookcases, beds, and even a bunk bed with a trundle. The attention to detail extended to the scullery/dining room wall, where artist Maria Ana Vasco Costa created a contemporary mural using handcrafted tiles, adding a touch of modernity to the classic setting.
Conclusion
The Chagas Apartment stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of heritage preservation and modern functionality. Through thoughtful interventions and meticulous craftsmanship, João Tiago Aguiar Arquitectos have breathed new life into this historic space, ensuring its legacy continues to inspire for generations to come.
