Revitalizing Spaces: Kharposhteh Apartment Renovation, Isfahan

In 2021, SE-BÆR Studio embarked on the transformation of a two-story lodge nestled in the historic district of Isfahan, Iran. Led by Mohsen Khazdooz and Adib Iravani, the project aimed to renovate the loft and rooftop, breathing new life into forgotten spaces.

Embracing Tradition

Roofs, once vibrant hubs of activity in Isfahan, have gradually succumbed to neglect, serving primarily as storage areas for modern utilities. Inspired by nostalgic recollections of rooftop gatherings and communal living, the project sought to reimagine these deserted spaces and revitalize their historic significance.

Unveiling Potential

By reclaiming the loft as a guest residence, the team dismantled unnecessary fixtures and reconfigured the layout for functionality and openness. Cantilevering the ceiling and installing expansive windows fostered a seamless integration between indoor and outdoor realms, maximizing natural light and panoramic views of the surroundings.

Reconnecting with Context

A key design focus was to harmonize the renovated spaces with their architectural heritage and urban context. Removing superfluous walls, widening staircases, and introducing skylights created a sense of openness and spontaneity, inviting inhabitants to engage with their environment on a visceral level.

Pioneering Innovation

The project aspires to serve as a prototype for reinvigorating neglected spaces within historic cityscapes. Dubbed the “Roof City,” this initiative advocates for comprehensive urban planning that celebrates Isfahan’s layered architectural heritage while fostering contemporary functionality and vibrancy.

A Harmonious Fusion

In crafting a new narrative for the Kharposhteh Apartment, meticulous attention was paid to preserving the essence of its past while embracing modern design sensibilities. Through thoughtful interventions and a commitment to authenticity, SE-BÆR Studio has breathed new life into Isfahan’s architectural tapestry, transforming forgotten spaces into vibrant testaments to the city’s rich cultural legacy.
