Situated at the intersection of Ridder and Vercingétorix streets in Paris’ 14th arrondissement, the Apartment Building in Paris project involves the renovation and expansion of a narrow mixed-use services building into a 37-unit residence. This building, managed by the Samu Social in Paris, stands as a testament to the revitalization of urban spaces to address social needs.
Redefining Architecture
Originally characterized by its curved shape and orange coating, the building’s refurbishment aims to imbue it with a contemporary aesthetic while retaining the essence of traditional Parisian architecture. A switch to strong grey bricks for the façade lends visual impact and durability, aligning with the building’s surroundings and enhancing its presence within the neighborhood.
Collaborative Efforts
The transformation of this building into a residence for the Samu Social of Paris reflects a collaborative effort between Groupe Galia and CoBe Architecture & Paysage. Together, they sought to create not just shelter but a nurturing environment for homeless individuals and families, emphasizing cohesion and understanding throughout the design process.
Architectural Features
The architectural design encompasses raised levels and beveled edges, creating a distinctive silhouette that contributes to the building’s elegance and prominence in the neighborhood. The addition of three concrete levels required careful reinforcement of the existing infrastructure, with materials chosen for their visual appeal and functionality.
Community Integration
Dubbed “Host Differently,” the initiative aims to provide high-quality housing and services tailored to the needs of families facing precarious situations. Through a combination of private apartments and shared spaces, the residence fosters a sense of community and inclusivity, promoting social integration and autonomy among its residents.
User-Centric Design
User consultation played a crucial role in shaping the design program, ensuring that the residence meets the needs and preferences of its inhabitants. Each accommodation is thoughtfully designed to preserve privacy while offering access to shared amenities and outdoor spaces, enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.
The Apartment Building in Paris by CoBe Architecture & Paysage exemplifies a holistic approach to urban development, where architectural innovation and social responsibility converge to create vibrant and inclusive living spaces within the heart of the city.
