Embracing Nature The Story of Open House in the Jungle

In 2022, while traveling through Costa Rica amidst the pandemic, my partner and I stumbled upon a piece of land nestled in the tropical rainforest. Inspired by the beauty of the surroundings, we embarked on a journey to create our home there. Setting up a tent, we spent several months immersing ourselves in the area, gaining insights into its unique ecosystem.

A Vision of Outdoor Living

Our vision for the house was clear from the outset – we wanted to embrace outdoor living and minimize our impact on the environment. With this in mind, we decided to design and build as much as possible on our own. From the structure to the furniture, most elements were meticulously crafted by hand. Meanwhile, my partner spearheaded the development of off-grid water and electricity systems, as well as the lighting concept.

Sustainable Design Solutions

The house’s design reflects our commitment to sustainability and harmony with nature. A light corrugated roof, supported by slender columns and beams made from local semi-hardwood, creates a minimalist yet sturdy structure. Rainwater is collected and stored in tanks, while curtains offer protection during heavy rains without compromising the sense of openness.

Living in Harmony with Wildlife

Living in the jungle means being intimately connected with nature. We have become attuned to the changing light, wind patterns, and the diverse array of smells that envelop us. Despite the presence of wildlife, including parrots and monkeys, we have fostered a harmonious coexistence. Simple design elements, such as a spacious mosquito net, ensure our safety while allowing us to appreciate the beauty of our surroundings.

Conclusion

Open House in the Jungle is more than just a dwelling; it is a testament to our deep reverence for nature and our commitment to sustainable living. By embracing the principles of simplicity, self-sufficiency, and mindfulness, we have created a sanctuary that not only protects us but also fosters a profound connection with the natural world.
