Situated in the bustling city of Bengaluru, India, the Terra Comb Residential Building by A Threshold stands as a testament to innovative design and sustainability. Completed in 2022, this residential architecture project occupies a 70′ x 40′ plot in a densely populated urban neighborhood, facing a narrow South park. Catering primarily to students and professionals, the design responds to the challenges posed by the surrounding buildings’ density and narrow setbacks.
Light and Connectivity
The architectural solution revolves around interconnected volumes that allow ample natural light to penetrate the building. These volumes serve as internal courts, hosting common activities such as reading and dining, while also serving as pause points along the building’s circulation. Despite the constraints of the urban environment, the Terra Comb Residential Building prioritizes connectivity and openness.
Sustainable Envelope
A key feature of the building envelope is its use of reclaimed Mangalore ridge tiles, sourced from a nearby factory. These tiles are repurposed to create a shield against the harsh sun, providing acoustic and visual screening while maintaining a comfortable internal environment. Installed in a framework of mild steel plates at two-feet intervals, the tiles offer both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Evaporative Cooling System
The building incorporates an innovative evaporative cooling system, inspired by traditional water jugs used to keep water cool during the summer. A drip irrigation system efficiently supplies water to planter boxes, while sprinkling water on terracotta tiles helps maintain interior coolness. The vegetation grown along the facade enhances biodiversity, attracting birds and insects, and sets a precedent for sustainable building practices in urban settings.
In essence, the Terra Comb Residential Building serves as a beacon of sustainable architecture, seamlessly integrating environmental consciousness with modern design principles. Through thoughtful planning and innovative solutions, A Threshold has created a residential space that not only addresses the needs of its occupants but also contributes positively to the urban landscape.
