By A Revolutionary Concept
The People’s Canopy represents more than just architecture; it embodies a transformative approach to urban design. These retractable canopies, conceived by People’s Architecture Office, serve as dynamic structures for events while also becoming events themselves. Designed to be cycled by citizens, these canopies can be paraded through city streets, expanding over entire thoroughfares, and revitalizing disconnected public spaces.
Innovative Design
At the core of the People’s Canopy is a two-story high expandable roof structure mounted on bicycle wheels, accommodating up to 10 cyclists. This ingenious design allows the canopy to collapse to the size of a double-decker bus, enabling easy transportation from one location to another. When deployed, the canopy extends to an impressive 12 meters in length and spans 10 meters, effectively covering entire streets and transforming spaces typically reserved for automobiles into vibrant pedestrian zones for events and gatherings.
Urban Intervention in Preston
Originally commissioned by the city of Preston in the UK, the People’s Canopy project aimed to address the decline of the historic city center and revitalize underused public spaces. Collaborating with In Certain Places, an urban arts program, the project sought to re-energize Preston’s streets, which had been overshadowed by urban sprawl and indoor shopping centers.
Cultural Fusion
Inspired by expandable canopies commonly found in Southern China, the design of the People’s Canopy blends Eastern innovation with Western urbanism. Over a dozen canopies were meticulously designed and fabricated in Beijing before being assembled in Preston. These mobile cultural venues became focal points for a series of events, including musical performances, street theater, and festivals like Preston
Pride and Lancashire Encounters. By linking public squares and markets, the canopies fostered community engagement and cultural exchange, breathing new life into the city’s urban landscape.
Global Recognition
Following their successful debut in Preston, the People’s Canopies gained international acclaim at the 2015 Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture in Hong Kong. Installed in Kowloon Park, these versatile structures served as dynamic platforms for various public activities. Continuously relocated, expanded, and contracted, the canopies encouraged spontaneous interactions and unexpected engagements, embodying the essence of urban vibrancy and creativity.
