Renovation of Xi’an South Gate Plaza by China Northwest Architecture Design and Research Institute

Context and Challenges

Xi’an South Gate Plaza occupies a central position along the historical axis of Xi’an, connecting various cultural relics spanning multiple dynasties. Despite its significance, the plaza faced challenges such as traffic congestion, substandard environmental quality, and architectural disarray in surrounding landmarks. To address these issues, China Northwest Architecture Design and Research Institute undertook a comprehensive renovation project.

Objectives and Vision

The project aimed to enhance the scenic facilities of South Gate Plaza, integrate its landscape system, and improve accessibility while preserving cultural relics and historical charm. Emphasizing green spaces, the renovation sought to rationalize ground and underground transportation systems for vehicles, pedestrians, and rail transit, all while revitalizing the area’s architectural heritage.

Design Approach

By employing space transition and greenery, the outer plaza design captures the iconic essence of Xi’an South Gate. Underground spaces were utilized for parking and tourism services, effectively resolving parking shortages and seamlessly integrating with existing urban infrastructure. The introduction of an underground pedestrian channel facilitated three-dimensional connectivity across the plaza, ensuring efficient circulation for both pedestrians and vehicles.

Urban Integration and Cultural Preservation

Temporary structures obstructing views and harmony were removed, paving the way for an improved streetscape. Street culture squares were strategically placed to complement the plaza’s ambiance. In the Song Garden area, traditional buildings were preserved and new constructions were sensitively integrated to maintain architectural coherence. Similarly, Miao Garden embraced a people-centric design, incorporating multi-layered green systems and water features to create a dynamic and transformative landscape.

Infrastructure and Facilities

Commercial and service spaces were integrated into basement levels, maximizing land use efficiency while minimizing visual impact. Glass curtain wall service facilities were discreetly nestled within the vicinity, ensuring functional accessibility without compromising the city’s ancient aesthetic. Pedestrian tunnels were extended to guide visitors into the inner plaza, promoting a seamless flow of movement and enhancing safety.

Cultural Revitalization

Post-renovation, Xi’an South Gate Plaza emerged as a testament to the city’s rich cultural heritage, blending modern amenities with historical significance. Serving as a vital hub for community engagement and urban development, the plaza symbolizes Xi’an’s status as a living embodiment of its storied past, fostering a harmonious coexistence between tradition and progress.
