Revitalizing Urban Space Montt Varas Square

Introduction

Montt Varas Square, a project by PLAN Arquitectos, has transformed a previously underutilized space into a vibrant civic square in the heart of Santiago.

Redevelopment Initiative

Originally, the site served as a parking area for judicial authorities, neglecting its potential for public use and detracting from the urban presence of significant heritage buildings, including the former National Congress.

Underground Parking and Plaza Redesign

The project’s innovative approach involved constructing a five-level underground parking facility, significantly increasing parking capacity while freeing up the surface area from vehicular congestion. This transformation paved the way for redesigning the upper plaza, creating a civic square surrounded by heritage buildings and preserving iconic features such as the Montt Varas monument.

Design Principles

The design prioritized the preservation and appreciation of the square’s architectural heritage. Horizontal simplicity guided the design decisions, with subtle changes in stone pavements demarcating important areas without overshadowing the existing architecture. The unified design of the square fosters a sense of tranquility amidst the bustling city center, encouraging visitors to pause and admire the surrounding heritage buildings.

Central Axis and Vegetal Elements

Structured around a central axis with a focus on the Montt Varas monument, the square incorporates vegetal elements to soften the entrances to the underground parking levels and integrate them seamlessly into the landscape. Additional green spaces near the Former National Congress extend the influence of the building’s gardens, enhancing the overall ambiance of the square.

Conclusion

Montt Varas Square stands as a testament to thoughtful urban redevelopment, successfully blending historical preservation with contemporary design. By repurposing space, enhancing accessibility, and celebrating architectural heritage, PLAN Arquitectos has revitalized this area, creating a welcoming civic square that serves as a focal point for community engagement and cultural appreciation in Santiago’s city center.
