San Miguel Cultural Square Refurbishment by OOIIO

Winning the First Prize

OOIIO has secured the First Prize in the competition for the rehabilitation of Plaza del Salvador in Talavera de la Reina, Spain. Organized by the city of Talavera de la Reina as part of the “10 + 4 URBAN” program, the competition aimed to revitalize several public spaces in the city. OOIIO emerged victorious in two contests, Plaza del Salvador and San Miguel Square, with proposals that celebrate ceramic, a key craft product in Talavera. By integrating ceramics into the design, OOIIO has not only revitalized local craftsmanship but also provided innovative solutions for public space rehabilitation.

Introduction of Ceramics

Ceramic, a centuries-old tradition in Talavera, plays a central role in OOIIO’s winning proposals. By showcasing modern applications of traditional pottery tiles, OOIIO has breathed new life into public spaces while preserving Talavera’s cultural heritage. The use of ceramics not only pays homage to local craftsmanship but also serves as a symbol of Talavera’s identity and pride.

San Miguel Square Rehabilitation

San Miguel Square underwent a transformation aimed at revitalizing the degraded public space. OOIIO’s approach focused on creating an inclusive urban corner that would serve as a new landmark for the city. Central to the design is the contemporary interpretation of Talavera’s pottery tiles, which have deep cultural significance for the city’s residents.

Urban Intervention Strategy

The rehabilitation of San Miguel Square began with a thorough analysis of the area’s needs, including circulation patterns, sunlight exposure, and existing infrastructure. OOIIO identified key challenges, such as limited accessibility and informal parking, and devised simple yet effective interventions to address them. The goal was to make the square more attractive and welcoming to all residents.

Vertical Plane Intervention

Rather than focusing solely on the horizontal plane, OOIIO opted to concentrate its intervention on the vertical plane of the square. By addressing the presence of tall buildings with imposing grey walls, OOIIO aimed to transform the perception of the square from a neglected space to a vibrant urban hub. Concrete benches were strategically placed to offer views of the ceramic mural, creating a focal point that enhances the square’s aesthetic appeal.

Enhancing Cultural Heritage

In addition to revitalizing the square, OOIIO’s intervention aims to enhance Talavera’s cultural heritage. By highlighting the medieval tower of the ancient wall and integrating it with the ceramic mural, OOIIO seeks to create a visually striking landmark that will attract visitors and locals alike. The rehabilitation of San Miguel Square represents a successful fusion of tradition and innovation, breathing new life into Talavera’s urban landscape.
