Mecanoo’s Vision for Villa Industria

Mecanoo presents its masterplan for Villa Industria, a redevelopment project located in Hilversum, the Netherlands. Inspired by the industrial heritage of the site, Mecanoo aims to create a vibrant community with a distinct identity and a green environment.

Recognizable Identity

The former site of the Regional Energy Supply Company in Hilversum had its own identity characterized by industrial buildings. With the relocation of the gasworks, Mecanoo seized the opportunity to redevelop the site, now known as Villa Industria. The masterplan includes 357 homes, small-scale businesses, and sporting facilities, all designed to reflect the industrial heritage of the area.

Green Environment

The urban plan prioritizes public space for pedestrians and cyclists, with recessed parking freeing up space for green areas and water features. A centrally located park adds to the green environment, promoting sustainability and community engagement.

Architectural Design

Mecanoo’s design incorporates elements of the site’s industrial past, with three cylindrical residential buildings reminiscent of old gasometers. The swimming pool has been refurbished to blend seamlessly with the new buildings, while robust steel columns support a new sports hall and fitness center. Modern homes with semi-circular roofs occupy the site of a former warehouse, blending industrial aesthetics with contemporary design.

Coherence and Diversity

The architecture of Villa Industria balances coherence with diversity. Consistent use of materials such as steel, glass, and brick creates harmony across the development, while variations in brick sizes, masonry techniques, and architectural details add diversity and interest. Each building pays homage to the history of the gasworks site, contributing to the industrial character of the neighborhood.

Conclusion

Mecanoo’s masterplan for Villa Industria demonstrates a thoughtful approach to urban redevelopment, combining elements of the site’s industrial past with modern design principles. By creating a recognizable identity, prioritizing green spaces, and integrating industrial aesthetics into the architecture, Villa Industria promises to be a vibrant and cohesive community in Hilversum.
